Recording

Process for Developing a Basic Recorded Minority Language Story Set

  • Choose language dialect
  • Make initial contacts with local workers/believers
  • Meet local people and discuss areas of worldview.
    • Concept of God
    • Concept of sin
    • Concept of man's need
    • Concept of why man needs God
    • Concept of spirit world
    • Understanding/misunderstanding of Bible - what do they know of Bible stories
    • Concept of what provision God has made
    • General Roman Catholic doctrines that are present in society
    • Understanding of sin- what was the first sin?
    • Understanding of sacrifice
    • Understanding of local evangelicals - legalism - sacerdotalism
    • Where do they get their understanding of God's word
    • What does "la Palabra de Dios" mean?
    • What are special sins that God dislikes?
    • Favorite stories
    • Have them tell stories of their town, history, "chistes" see what kind of animation and expression they use.
    • Difference between telling a true story and a fictional story?
  • Chose stories
    • Basic OT and NT stories
    • Decision may have to be made given amount of stories that can fit into delivery mechanism (60 minute tapes?) I suggest developing necessary story set and working from there rather than from time limitations.
  • Develop stories in simple intermediary language (Spanish)
  • Check stories for difficult terms in minority language.
    • Work with group in developing appropriate terms (e.g. desert)
  • Tell story set in fast track mode
    • Work to prepare translator in preparing for fast track conference.
    • Invite a group of about 10 to a three day story telling conference
    • Stories are told with translator (if necessary)
    • From the beginning ask if they can retell stories faithfully
    • Have them practice.
    • For this purpose dialogue will be less intensive than normal storying proceedure
    • Dialogue mainly to make sure they understood the story clearly
    • Let at least a week go by so the stories will begin to take form in their mind
  • Train storyers
    • It may be necesary to leave them a recording of the stories they will be telling in simple Spanish so they can review.
    • The purpose is to have a told story, not a read story
    • Gather the people who appear to be the best possibility for recording
    • Tell story,
    • have them repeat
    • Have them determine if the story was told correctly
    • Work on expression and story telling style
  • Record
    • Record story before the group using wireless microphone to give liberty and encourage good expression.
    • Ask group if story is well told
    • Ask translator if the story is well told
    • Have another person tell it again
    • Do not force this time. Allow for several sessions so as to not put undue pressure on storiers and yourself.
  • Post recording production
    • Have professionals do post production cleanup and packaging
    • Pay for a bilingual minority language speaker to go to studio for post production consultation.
  • Test recorded stories
    • Check the recorded stories with a broad spectrum of believers
    • Was the story biblical?
    • Is the story easy to understand?
    • Is the story attractive to the hearer?
    • Does the story come accross as true?
    • Are people likely to be impacted by the set of stories?
    • What distribution suggestions do you have?
  • If necessary, re-train and re-record stories that do not make the grade
  • Develop distribution package
    • Radio
    • Cassette
    • CD
    • Print???
  • Distribution
    • Op Go?
    • At market?
    • House to house?
    • Decisions must be based on
      • economy,
      • availability of technology
      • security
      • appropriateness
      • wide distribution opportunities
    • Consider multiple media.
  • Other Issues
    • The decision may be made to use only one or two storiers for taping purposes.
      • Advantages:
        • Consistency may be maintained in stories.
        • You can choose your best storiers
      • Disadvantages:
